INTRODUCTION

Assalamualaikum dearest readers

To the new readers of my blog, Welcome my dear. My full name is Nurul Balqis Binti Roslan, I am comfortable being called Balqis. And I'm 18 years old. I'm live in Sg. Besi, Kuala Lumpur. I got an offer to further my study at university level in Diploma in Business Insurance(BA141). I'm now student who is studying at UiTM Alor Gajah, Melaka. Being the youngest, I always given more attention than others so my family motivated me to try being independent, therefore I took on the responsibility to studying for it and comprehend the course I took. So, the primary reason I'm creating this portfolio is to briefly introduce UED102.

Topic 1: LEARNING STYLE INVENTORY


Scoring Your Inventory

Tally your responses by adding up only the YES answers. Put the number of the question in the appropriate box. For example, if you answered question number 9 with a yes, write 9 in the VISUAL box. If you answered number 11 with a yes, write number 11 in the AUDITORY box. If you answered number 7 with a yes, write 7 in the KINESTHETIC box. Add up the number of questions in each box and write a total for each one. This will determine your preferred learning style. Don’t worry if a dominant mode doesn’t emerge. From the learning style inventory , my preferred learning style is based on Visual and Auditory style.



Characteristics of Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic Modes


  • Visual learners need to see information. If your preferred style is visual, you have strong visualization skills and can remember objects, shapes, and pictures. You learn by reading, and by watching films, videos, and demonstrations. You can see pictures in your mind.


  • Auditory learners need to hear information. If your preferred style is auditory, you have a “good ear” and can hear differences in tones and rhythm. Reading out loud will be beneficial. You can remember what you hear in a lecture.


  • Kinesthetic learners need to be physically active and doing things. If your preferred style is kinesthetic, you are a hands-on learner. You have good coordination and learn by doing. You generally have an active approach to learning.



Using Multi-Sensory Learning


Now that you know your learning style(s), you have an idea of the important role your senses play in the learning process. The best strategy is to combine modalities whenever possible. Incorporate visual, kinesthetic, and auditory learning into your study plan. Using combinations will strengthen your ability to retain information. Be creative. Add your own ideas. Here are some strategies:



Visual learners:


  • Create mind maps, flow charts, and diagrams using bright colors. Put them where you can view them frequently.

  • Practice building your visual memory.

  • Rewrite your notes using different colors.


Auditory learners:


  • After you read a page in your textbook, summarize the information out loud in your own words.

  • Tape your instructor’s lecture, and if you are a commuter, listen to the tape on the way home, either in your car, or on the bus or subway.

  • Discuss the material that you have been learning with a friend or study group.


Kinesthetic learners

  • Use your hands. Cut up charts and diagrams. Create flash cards and move them around with large, sweeping movements.
  • Walk and talk about the information. Recite as you move.

  • Type on a computer keyboard. You are using your muscle memory.



Developing Your Style:

Combining Visual, Auditory, & Kinesthetic Modes


Additional ways you can use multi-sensory learning:


  • Use background music (no lyrics to distract you) when you study. Choose a piece of music for a particular subject. Every time you study that subject, play the music. You are creating an association for your subconscious mind. You may be surprised to discover how much of the information you remember when you play the music by itself. You are combining Visual and Auditory modes.

  • Use rap or rhyme to memorize information. To add Kinesthetic to this Auditory mode, walk, dance, or clap when you sing.

  • If you are athletically inclined, dribble a basketball while you recite information. You are combining Auditory and Kinesthetic modes.

  • Study with a partner or in a group. Discuss the information. Hold up flash cards, diagrams, hierarchies, and mind maps to test each other. This combines Visual and Auditory modes.

  • Put yourself in the picture. You can do this with a subject like history; participate in a battle or a significant meeting such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Ask yourself how you feel. This combines Visual and Kinesthetic modes.

  • Make up your own strategies. Incorporate multi-sensory learning into your studies.



Additional Strategies:


  • If you are learning a new vocabulary word or math formula, write it in the air using large, sweeping movements. Close your eyes and see it in your mind’s eye. Say the words out loud. You are combining V, A, and K modes.

  • Use the sense of smell. One student created olfactory (smell) associations by using scented pencils for studying. He used a grape pencil for one subject and a chocolate one for another. When taking an exam, he used the appropriate pencil to help him recall information. He combined V and K and added an additional sensory mode.

  • Use 5- by 7-inch flash cards to self-quiz. Use different and bright colors for each side. Lay them on a desk or table. Move them around and put them in different places as you study, or create a game with them. Place them into different categories in a hierarchical fashion such as “don’t know,” “review,” and “need to study more.”

  • Create your own auditory notes using a tape recorder.


My Personal Learning Style Plan:


Choose for the suggestions listed above 4-5 techniques you will try this quarter as you study for classes. List them here as an action plan detailing how you will incorporate multi-sensory learning into your study time.


  1. Before all else, I watch lecturers video to revise and study.
  2. To review what I had learned, I searched the internet and the teacher's notes.
  3. From there on, I start to make my own mind-map, and compile in a file.
  4. Walk and talk the information everywhere I go.    
From this personal learning style plan, I can actually comprehend better study strategies now and try to score well in my exams.



Topic 2 : GOAL STATEMENTS


Goals are the ends toward something which we direct our effort on it.In other words, goals is something that we want achieve and aim to get it in our life.As a student, it is important to set a goal in our study or other things.For example, we can improve our academic performance in university by learning to set goal in our mind that will motivate you to do well in examination.If you set a goal, it will increase your chance to success in life.



FIVE STEP APPROACH TO SETTING GOALS.

  • STEP 1 : TENTATIVE GOAL STATEMENT

Example:  I want at least to get B in Business Mathematic

  • STEP 2: LIST OF OBSTACLES

Example : I have a hearing problem , and I struggle while taking notes.

  • STEP 3 : LIST OF RESOURCES

Example : I’ll rewrite my notes after class.

  • STEP 4 : REVISED GOAL STATEMENT

Example: I’ll try to get B in Financial Accounting.

  • STEP 4: POLISHED GOAL STATEMENT

Example : I will achieve a A in Business Mathematic this semester.


10 TIPS TO GET OFF TO THE RIGHT START THIS SEMESTER

  • Be selective in choosing classes
  • Go to all classes and take note
  • Keep up with your reading assignment
  • Learn to say ‘no’
  • Create a good study environment
  • Set realistic grade goals
  • Study for exams
  • Learn to predict exam questions
  • Relax when taking exams
  • Go to college learning center when we need help


Topic 3 :  PRIORITIZED TO-DO LIST


The main purpose of having prioritized to-do list is not to make sure everything done on the spot. This list helps you to set your mind of the priority of each task that you need to complete due to the deadline. Prioritized to-do list encourage us to systemize our task management so that, we won't miss any single important assignments. It's not that we take easy of the less priority task, we just make it easier to refer with task need to be done first. Below, i attached the example of prioritized to-do list.



Topic 4 :  MEMORY & CONCENTRATION STRATEGIES


Memory Strategies

There are 3 type of memory strategies.

1) Sensory memory
Which is a temporary memory.

2) Long-term memory
Memory of an information for a long period of time.

3) Short-term memory
Memory of an information in a short period of time.


Give yourself 1 point for each YES answer to question 2,3,4 and 5 and 1 point for each NO answer to questions 1,6,7,8,9, and 10. Now total up your points. A low score indicates that you need to improve your memory strategies. A high score indicates that you are already using many good memory strategies.

I notice that I am very bad at memorizing, so I was kind of expecting this results. After doing these memory strategy questions, I now notice that I don't use many good memory strategies.

Concentration Strategies

Concentration is also important in studies in order to not being left behind in lectures or studies. These strategies help to boost our ability of focusing towards something. When you do not concentrate, your work will be less satisfying.

Give yourself 1 point for each YES answer to questions 4,5,6, and 9 and 1 point for each NO answer to questions 1,2,3,7,8, and 10. Now total up your points. A low score indicates that you need some help improving your concentration. A high score indicates that you are already using many good concentration strategies.

I've noticed that I'm moderately good at concentrating. After doing these concentration strategies questions, I've come to notice that I use a lot of excellent concentration strategies.


Topic 5 :  NOTE-TAKING STRATEGIES

These note taking strategies will help you to take better notes:
  1. Make clear and accurate notes.
  2. Come to class prepared.
  3. Compare your notes. 
  4. Minimize distractions. 
  5. Organize your notes. 
  6. Use abbreviations and symbols. 
  7. Write clearly. 
  8. Review your notes.

A low score indicates that you need some help in note-taking high score indicates that you are already using many good note-taking strategies.

I am really skilled at taking notes, and I'm pleased with the outcome presently.I discovered that I am quite skillful and apply numerous techniques when taking notes after completing this question about note-taking strategies.

CALCULATING GRADE POINT AVERAGE 

The final examination results and assessments at the end of every semester are assigned a Grade Point Average (GPA) and a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) which represent a student's academic achievement, 

 

A Grade Point Average (GPA) refers to the calculated average of the letter grades a student. earns in each semester following a 0 to 4.0 scale. 


How to calculate GPA:

GPA = Grade Point Average
CGPA = Cumulative Grade Point Average
